Manufacturing for US OEM companies

BwAsc stands for Bridgewater Associates. Our company is a Manufacturers Representative that supplies all kinds of original equipment manufacturers with precision metal and plastic parts.  We handle all kinds of Castings including Investment Casting (What’s Investment Casting? Check out this video!), Stampings, Plastics, Machining, Screw Machining, Sheet Metal, Prototyping and Chemical Etching to name just a few.

Our company is 40 years old now. Over the years, it’s been evident that this industry is getting smaller and smaller, and sizable manufacturing has been routinely moving offshore. I’m wondering, will US manufacturing continue to dwindle? Or is it possible that we will find a way to rekindle the flame and bring home some of what has been lost in the past 15 years?

I’m interested in hearing what others think. Me personally? I’m an eternal optimist.

It depends on your tolerance for stress. We have placed several orders with an over-seas vendor because the price was so low, but after the time spent getting samples through customs, emails in the middle of the night and the added expenses of parts not meeting specs it would have been faster and cheaper to have it done domestically. I am willing to pay a little extra to ensure we have what we need, how we need it and when we need it. Price isn’t everything!

We come across certain parts that actually bode well being manufactured in the US vs. offshore. If the quantity is low, and if there isn’t a lot of assembly or hand-finishing, 9 times out of 10 we can source the best deals on US soil.

But don’t you think it’s kind of fun now that the world is flat? :)

I agree that our earth is getting smaller and smaller. On the one hand, some manufacturers located in developed countries lost their previous markets for their high cost products. They’ll have to search for other development direction of their business. This adjustment process is really hard. On the other hand, this change promote human society forward. We can share social resources and unite our wisdom to create more social wealth.
